My Breaking Point

My game was chaotic. I'd shoot 74 one day and 95 the next. There was no pattern. My golf swing depended on tempo and timing, so I hit thousands of balls at the range to make sure I never lost it.

I had to coordinate so many moving parts that it was nearly impossible to repeat. My inner swing monologue sounded like something out of a horror movie:

"Swing your arms up like this."
"Hinge your wrists at the right moment."
"Load your back leg. Don't sway."
"Pause at the top. Don't rush."
"Drop your arms in the slot on the way down."
"Hold the lag."
"Fire the hips."
"Release your hands — but not too early."
"Keep your head still."
"Shift your weight."
"Don't forget to follow through."

Hitting a great shot felt like the golf gods had blessed me with a miracle. On rare occasions I'd string a few perfect shots together and think, "Now I've finally got it!" — only for everything to fall apart on the next swing.

That was my reality before a single 5-minute lesson changed everything.

"Just SHUT UP and HIT THE BALL."

My instructor told me to make two changes. Two things that went completely against everything I believed about the golf swing. "Keep your weight forward throughout the entire swing. Swing your hands in, low around your body." I looked at him like he was crazy. Those were the things everybody told me NOT to do. But I did it — and I never looked back.
